midSUFFOLK CROQUET CLUB is aiming to offer facilities for all to play the game in whatever form is preferred. Coaching will be provided for all members. The club will act as a place for gatherings of croquet players to play in a social&/or competitive context.
We believe it is desirable to encourage people of all genders, all cultures and and all ages to play the game. Croquet can also be played by the disabled, though we cannot accommodate players with crutches or wheelchairs because there is potential damage to the lawns. Croquet is played widely in open clubs thoughout the UK, and is certainly not limited to tea parties at the vicarage or an annual event at the Baronial Hall.
The main forms of the game are Association croquet and Golf croquet. Each game can be played in abbreviated formats as a doubles game or as a singles game.
In Association croquet one side (one or two persons) plays on the lawn at a time and attempts to run two balls through all of 12 hoops without making a mistake. If a mistake is made, the other side then plays the other two balls until a breakdown occurs. And so on. This game is very skilled, involves delicate touch play, is highly tactical and has been likened to snooker since a good player can make a very big break.
In Golf croquet both sides are on the lawn at the same time. By taking turns the winner is the side that scores seven hoops first with either of its allocated two balls. In golf croquet there is a big emphasis on running hoops from long distances and hitting opponents' balls away from the hoop area. Golf croquet is the easier to learn of the two main forms.
midSUFFOLK CC has two coaches. One coach plays Association croquet and Golf croquet. The other plays Golf croquet only at the moment and has represented England in that format. Basic coaching is free of charge. Coaching is provided for improvers with a suggested small donation for club funds.
