This session will be devoted to fun 'play with a purpose'.
The game to be played is golf croquet 'one ball'. Each player has just one ball and will play in a singles game against another player of the same standard. The first to five hoops wins. Players' choice of shots can be discussed if desired; also the technique of taking shots can be discussed with the coach. Let's keep to the rules also.
If the lawns are free we will also learn how practically to use the extra turns that are available in the handicapping system for golf croquet. Extra turns (ETs) are part and parcel of the game. Players are allocated a handicap (the laws are on trial and changing so this will depend on the year and location). New players start on a handicap of just below the high limit, but once they can play the game, soon progress.
Example: If a 10 player plays a singles against a 7 player then the 10 player gets three extra turns for the whole of the game. They can be taken at any time, but a player cannot score a hoop on an extra turn.
There are good occasions to take an extra turn or extra turns (more than one can be taken at a time); we will learn how to be crafty when using them. Generally they are used in attacking play to position yourself at an unassailable point on the lawn. Well used aggressively after running a hoop that gives a long run to the next (1, 3, 7, 8, and 12). Occasionally they are used defensively when a player is definitely well down (say 5 - 2 down).
As an alternative coaching session, if the lawns are being maintained we will practise hoop running, jump shots or stop shots on the grass verge. We will talk about the use of extra turns, and then play a few hoops on the border to illustrate how to use them effectively. Individual tuition will be given.
We are now making real progress. At this stage some beginners who have attended all the coaching will be able to help new beginners.
